Dallas Tree Service Reviews: Key Takeaways

HOMR reviewed 25 Dallas tree companies and scheduled over 60 tree trimming services last year. We used this service data to create a list of the best Dallas tree services for most DFW homeowners.

We think Chippers Tree Service is the best tree service for most homeowners in the Dallas service area due to their competitive pricing, service offerings, and an ISA certified arborist on staff. We think Supreme Tree Service is great for basic tree trimming and tree removal jobs.

Here's what we'll cover in this Dallas tree service hiring guide:

  • A Dallas TX tree service must understand 3 key service factors: native tree species, Dallas tree pest and disease trends, and local weather concerns like heat, hail storms and high wind.
  • Don't hire a handyman to do a professional tree job, no matter how small! Use a licensed, insured and bonded tree surgeon or tree service, with no exceptions.
  • Every quality tree service in Dallas should have an ISA certified arborist on staff. A certified arborist has extra education and on-the-job experience to diagnose tree health, treat diseased trees and handle emergency tree service.
  • Rule of thumb: Schedule tree trimming every 3-5 years for mature trees, especially live oak trees. Younger oak trees should be pruned and trimmed every 2-3 years.

The Data & Research: Why You Should Trust Us

live oak trees are endemic species for dallas tree services

We’ve helped our members book over 5 dozen Dallas area tree service appointments in the last 12 months. These residential tree services included:

  • 45 tree trimmings, including tree cabling and basic pruning
  • 12 stump grinding, stump removal and tree fertilization projects
  • Hazardous tree removal service, including live oaks, pecans and maple trees.

Most of our team members are Dallas homeowners, so the search for quality area service providers is personal to us. We researched the specific tree industry issues of the Dallas Fort Worth area:

  • Endemic species, like the live oak and Texas ash;
  • Pest and disease trends, like fall webworms and live oak wilt; and
  • Natural weather concerns, like heat, high winds and occasional freezing events.

Our research and data cultivation gave us a clear road map on how to select the right company for most Dallas tree needs.

The questions you ask during a tree service estimate help guide a successful project. Learn the 10 best questions to ask a Dallas tree service before you make a hiring decision.

The Dallas Tree Experts We Interviewed for This Guide

For this article our research team interviewed 11 Dallas tree service providers — 4 tree care companies we work with regularly, and 7 other well-reviewed DFW tree contractors. We asked for their insights regarding popular Dallas tree services.

We also spoke to multiple realtors, and gained valuable insight into the role tree care plays in curb appeal and property value. These conversations helped us understand how tree planting and trimming factor into Dallas landscape development and design trends.

Finally, we interviewed an ISA certified arborist who provided valuable insight into current best practices for diseased tree treatment, tree risk assessment and tree removal. To ensure unbiased opinions, we interviewed an arborist outside the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

How We Selected The Best Dallas Tree Service

tree pruning is a core service of dallas tree companies

The most important factor in our Dallas tree service rankings was variety and quality of services. DFW contractors must offer 7 residential tree services to rank highly on our list:

  1. Tree Trimming and Pruning
  2. Tree Removal
  3. Tree Fertilization
  4. Tree Planting
  5. Stump Grinding and Removal
  6. Tree Pest Remediation
  7. Emergency Tree Removal

Through these criteria, our review of Dallas tree service companies left us with 7 service providers. From there, HOMR's team based the remainder of its Dallas tree company review process on 4 core factors:

  1. Service and Reputation - We looked for providers that held service standards high. We eliminated providers who didn't show up on time, communicate or had lower than 4-stars on major review platforms.
  2. Hard data - We also compared hard numbers on pricing and total numbers of services completed. We paired this data with customer feedback from HOMR's member base. Companies who were priced well outside the market were also eliminated
  3. Qualifications - Tree trimming is a dangerous profession and involves more hazards than even a standard home service repair. Being insured and bonded was a non-negotiable.
  4. Honest Pricing - We only considered Dallas tree companies that provide free quotes and estimates.

Green Flags:

✅ Longtime (or lifelong) Texans — understanding of native species

✅ Certified arborist on staff

✅ Emergency tree service capabilities

✅ Transparent pricing and job scheduling

✅ Properly licensed, bonded and insured

✅ Positive public history of customer reviews

Red Flags:

🚫 No general liability policy, lack of a surety bond

🚫 Extreme or severe trimming recommendations (deep, invasive cuts can damage or kill your tree)

🚫 Vague pricing structure

🚫 Lack of certified arborist on staff

🚫 Unclear scheduling — fluctuation of dates, no-shows, etc.

🚫 Recent “area transplants” without pertinent species knowledge

Above and Beyond: Tree Service Certifications

For tree trimming, we felt it was crucial to add another factor to our decision. Our experience consistently proves the value of an ISA certified arborist to a quality tree care company.

A certified arborist takes extra, voluntary steps to exhibit enhanced knowledge of trees. These individuals engage in extra education and must pass a rigorous exam. Their advanced studies allow arborists to diagnose and remediate tree pests, oversee deep root fertilization, and stop the spread of disease to other trees on your property.

HOMR also values tree companies that are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. There are 50+ DFW tree companies competing for your business. We think BBB accreditation shows which contractors are willing go to the extra mile to prove their transparency and ethical business practices.

Dallas Tree Service Reviews: Who We Picked

We selected Chippers Tree Service as the best overall tree company in the Dallas service area. For basic tree trimming and pruning jobs, we recommend Supreme Tree Service DFW.

Here's why we like these 2 tree service providers, and the non-negotiables they fulfill.

🏆 Chippers Tree Service: Best Overall Dallas Tree Service

Why we like them: Chippers Tree Service is a full service tree trimmer. Full service operators offer things like fertilization and bug treatments on top of the normal faire. We think that most homeowners benefit from the additional expertise and having one number to call when their trees are looking shabby.

We also like Chippers' excellent coverage of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex (going out as far as Arlington!) and variety of service options. Chippers customers speak highly of their tree removal service.

Non negotiables: Ramiro and his son Edgar run a fully-insured business focused on affordable tree care and experienced service. Their staff has over 30 years of experience and includes a certified arborist, which we highly valued in our criteria.

🏆 Supreme Tree Service: Best for Basic Tree Trimming and Pruning

If you don't need fertilizer and pesticide service, Supreme Tree Service DFW does the basics really really well: pruning, trimming, and stump grinding.

Why we like them: The owner, Carlos Salinas, knowledge of trees and when you should (and shouldn't) trim them is extensive. Our members constantly compliment Supreme's workmanship, and that feedback is mirrored in their Google reviews: 4.8 stars across 162 reviews.

Non negotiables: like Chippers, Supreme also is fully insured and has an ISA-certified arborist on staff.

Honorable Mentions

The following Dallas tree trimming companies make our list of honorable mentions — they didn’t quite top our list, but we'd like to spotlight their positive attributes and explain why we didn't choose them.

Please note: HOMR’s research team is constantly updating its database, and our rankings change over time. Check back to see if our recommended companies change!

Albert's Tree Service: Established in 2010, Albert's is a local business with good native tree knowledge, fair pricing and 24/7 emergency availability. We like Albert’s Tree Service’s reputation and service offerings. We can’t rate them higher right now, as they do not have an ISA certified arborist on staff.

Green Pine Tree Service: We like Green Pine Tree Service's availability — they're open 24 hours a day, 6 days a week (closed Sunday). They have an arborist on staff, and are well-reviewed for their cable installation and bracing. However, we were concerned by several recent reviews noting rudeness of on-site staff and unsolicited door-to-door advertising.

Texas Tree Surgeons: This Garland, TX tree company is open 6 days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Sunday). They also offer certified arborist services, and are known for their Tree Health Care check-ups. We'd love to see them offer 24/7 emergency services at least 1-2 days per week.

Alvarado Tree Trimming and Care: Alvarado's website is a bit hard to find, and we weren't able to verify several key pieces of information. We don't believe they have an arborist on staff. However, their online review history is very strong. Customers seem to appreciate their proficient, prompt service.

Lindsey Tree Service: Their online reviews are a mixed bag, and a little confusing. We found review pages for Lindsey's Tree Service, Lindsey Tree Service Dallas, and Lindsey Tree Services — each page had vastly differently rankings for what appears to be the same business.

What to Know Before You Hire a Dallas Tree Pro

Save yourself time and money — learn how to answer these 2 questions before you call a tree service:

  1. Does my oak tree need to be trimmed?  Live oaks are synonymous with Dallas County — how often should you have yours trimmed?
  1. How do I spot common Texas tree diseases? Are those brown leaves normal, or a sign of oak wilt or fire blight?

Does My Oak Tree Need to Be Trimmed?

Most mature oak trees do not need yearly trimming. If you're unsure about what types of trees you own, a good rule of thumb is scheduled tree pruning every 3-5 years. Some slow-growing mature trees can be trimmed every 5-10 years.

Trim young oak trees every 2-3 years. A large percentage of Dallas homeowners specifically ask us about oak trees. Young oak trees should be trimmed every 2-3 years.

Mature oak trees should be trimmed every 3-5 years. Mature oaks require tree trimming less frequently. Service every 3-5 years, unless you notice issues like cracked branches or branches that overhang your roof.

5 Texas Tree Diseases (and How to Spot Them)

Learn how to diagnose the 5 most common Texas tree diseases before you call a tree surgeon or arborist. You’ll give them valuable information walking into the job — and hopefully, enough time to save your trees!

Oak Wilt is a pervasive fungal tree disease that specifically affects oak trees. It is difficult to treat, as it affects trees above and below ground. It spreads via root transmission — when one oak is infected, its roots pass the fungus to neighboring oak trees.

  • Oak wilt symptoms: Check your oak tree leaves regularly for signs of oak wilt. Look for an oak leaf with yellow or brown veins, which then turn brown at the edges and fall off prematurely. If you see these signs, call a tree service with a certified arborist immediately.

Dutch Elm outbreaks in North Texas are cause for concern. Dutch elm is spread by beetles (usually elm bark beetles) and can kill most elm trees in 1 to 4 years. The best prevention advice is to avoid pruning your elms between April and September — this is elm bark beetle migration season.

  • Dutch Elm symptoms: If you notice yellowing or curling leaves, Dutch elm disease may be present. Sadly, this symptom usually means it's too late. But you can save your other elm trees — quickly contact an emergency tree removal expert.

Fire Blight is generally relegated to flowering and fruit-bearing trees. Check rose, pear, apple, hawthorn and various berry trees for symptoms. Leaves will turn brown or black, and curl as though they've been burned. Tree branches will develop cankers and lesions that eventually spread throughout the branch system.

  • Fire blight symptoms: Fire blight is a disease that cannot be treated, but is preventable. Your diseased trees should be removed immediately. If you are worried about fire blight, hire a professional to spray susceptible trees with bactericide in the spring.

Hypoxylon Canker is another common Texas tree disease, often found in live oaks. The disease is a bane on unhealthy and overgrown trees. The fungus enters through damaged limbs and trunks, and eventually causes dead branches and dusty spores.

  • Hypoxylon canker symptoms: Initial signs of the fungus include yellowed leaves that grow smaller than normal. Sap in the cankered areas may turn white. If you notice these symptoms, it's time to call a certified arborist.

Bacterial Leaf Scorch is a nasty bacterial infection that restricts the flow of water from your tree’s roots to its crown. It spreads through leafhoppers and other related insects, so it’s urgent to contain and treat the disease before it travels to other trees.

  • Bacterial leaf scorch symptoms: Look for premature browning of your leaves, beginning with older leaves towards the center of your tree and spreading outward. You’ll first notice this early browning in mid to late summer.
Get a free Texas tree health assessment! Our new guide to Texas tree health checkups lets you diagnose like an expert tree doctor. Each tree checkup takes less than 5 minutes!

Conclusion

Smart tree maintenance requires a balance between self-monitoring and professional service. North Texas property owners deserve to know what they can do themselves, and what jobs require a tree care service.

  • Hire a Dallas tree service with well-trained professionals that provide a variety of services — tree trimming, tree pruning, stump grinding, tree cutting and cabling.
  • Dallas area tree companies should have a strong working knowledge of every endemic tree species. Chief among these are live oak, crepe myrtle, pecan and maple trees.
  • Prioritize a tree company that offers 24/7 emergency tree service. Hail storms and high winds don't happen on a schedule!

HOMR has free quotes waiting from Chippers Tree Service and Supreme Tree Service — get started on your property's tree care and establish a strong trimming routine.
